Whether it’s for transporting your dog in the car or for him to have his “relaxation” space in your home, your dog needs to have a clean and well-maintained crate.
Here are some cleaning tips. This maintenance limits odours and allows your dog to have the most beautiful coat possible.
Cleaning the gate
As far as the grid is concerned, nothing very complicated. A good brushstroke such as a broom or household brush will be enough to remove the dust. If you wish to clean it a little more deeply, you can use a sponge soaked in water mixed with white vinegar.
Cleaning the removable tray
The advantage of the removable tray is that you can easily put it in your bathtub or in your garden, if you are lucky enough to have one, to clean it more easily.
The crates I recommend often have a removable tray.
Soapy water may be sufficient for daily maintenance. Once rinsed, you can complete the cleaning with white vinegar. The ideal is to leave it on for 5-10 minutes, then rinse and dry. If you wish to disinfect the tray, here you can use bleach and then rinse thoroughly. This will remove any bacteria.
Cleaning the bed
Whether you use a cousin or a blanket, it should be shaken and removed from your dog’s hair every day. An adhesive brush or the nozzle of your vacuum cleaner will do the trick.
In addition, the bed should be washed at least once a week. Most baskets have a removable cover. You can then wash the cover or blanket in the washing machine in hot water with a hypoallergenic detergent to eliminate as many bacteria as possible and limit the risk of allergies for your dog.
As for the foam, if it is not allowed in the machine, you can wash it in a basin of warm water also with a hypoallergenic detergent. You can then let it dry in the open air in the sun if the weather permits.
On the other hand, if it is authorized in machine, do not hesitate to put one or two tennis balls which will allow it to keep its swelling. Above all, do not use fabric softener as it tends to promote allergies!
Why is it important to clean the crate?
Daily maintenance and regular cleaning of your dog’s crate is important for several reasons.
First of all, for the well-being of your pet, who, rest assured, will appreciate you taking care of his bedding. It will also allow you to limit the appearance of certain parasites (fleas, ticks…) or even unpleasant odors. If you have a transport crate, this is even more important because the odors are more quickly absorbed in small spaces such as the car.
However, don’t forget to wash your dog if he needs to be washed as well. The result will be even better.
